James Longueville

From Wilson Steer, Sir John Arnesby-Brown right through to Edward Seago - the influence of the new Romantics in British Painting at the turn of the 20th century is clear in James` work.

James Longueville PS RBSA was born in Waverton, Chester. Following a career in journalism, James started to paint professionally in 1972 concentrating on the landscape around his South Cheshire studio.

James has painted extensively in Ireland over the past decade and enjoys solo exhibitions in Dublin every other year. He regularly paints in France and has exhibited in many European countries. James paints in a traditional style and from the watery mists of a Norfolk landscape to the afternoon sun bouncing off Venetian architecture, his work captures the scenes with sensitivity to light and mood.
James Longueville was elected a member of the Pastel Society in 1983 and the Royal Society of British Artists in 1989. He has twice won the Patterson Pastel Award at the Pastel Society & was awarded the John White Memorial Prize at Patterson's Venice in Peril Exhibition 2010. James has exhibited regularly with the Royal Society of British Artists, the Royal Society of Oil Painters, the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour, the Pastel Society and many galleries at home and abroad. His work can be found in both private and public collections.

His work successfully captures colour, light and atmosphere. Being interested in, and/or excited by, his subject is of paramount importance to him - he is fascinated by light and its interaction with colour and activity.
