Artist Biography
This stunning, realistic oil painting of a squirrel is signed by the artist, Carl Whitfield, in the lower right corner. The painting is finished with a high-quality champagne frame and white slip.
Carl Whitfield was born in Leeds, West Yorkshire in 1958. He left school to pursue a career in commercial management but after several years he returned to his first love, painting, and decided to make it his life’s work. Carl Whitfield started painting at the age of four and was completely self-taught.
As a full-time artist, he first started out with airbrush art on motorcycles and cars, winning him various awards and a respected reputation within the motoring community. But not long after, he returned to oil painting as this is what he was most passionate about. He closely studied wildlife and farm animals, spending the next few years practising and perfecting his technique.
Whitfield was heavily influenced by English artists John Atkinson Grimshaw, Edgar Hunt and John Frederick Herring.
He now paints well-observed traditional farmyard scenes and wildlife in precise detail and vibrant tones, specialising in miniature style detailed paintings in oils.
His reputation developed as the leading painter of chickens in the country, and he soon added ducks, mice, badgers, red squirrels, foxes, hedgehogs, birds and numerous other countryside creatures to his repertoire. He occasionally paints still life of a stunning, three-dimensional quality.
Carl Whitfield now lives on the outskirts of Leeds amidst the farms, fields, woods and wildlife that were such an influential part of his childhood and artistic development. His paintings are widely collected both in the UK and around the world.
