Framed oil painting of a distant landscape with hills next to a lake. Signed in the lower left corner by the artist, Michael James Smith.
Michael James Smith was born in Southend-on-Sea, in 1976. He was the second son of the British landscape artist, David Smith. Michael grew up surrounded by his father’s art. His father would often take Michael on trips to the countryside, which later gave him much inspiration into his own work.
Throughout Smith’s school days, he excelled in art-related subjects especially with his drawing and painting. At the age of seventeen, he secured a place at the Southend College of Art and Technology, to pursue his dream to train as an architect. In 1993, he then decided to attend one of his father’s exhibitions at Harrod’s Picture Gallery. He was taken back by the respect, admiration and delight expressed by those attending the exhibition, this made Michael truly realise how his father was a master of the art.
The following two years at college, Michael became more keen on the idea of becoming a professional artist. Michael was nineteen when he completed his first painting, in just 4 weeks.
A local gallery sold this painting for him, as he was returning home from the gallery, the painting had already sold. This success was then followed when not long after, a gallery in Leatherhead, Surrey had also agreed to sell one of his works. Within a few weeks, the gallery began purchasing all of his painting due to popular demand. This has since carried on throughout Michael’s career.
He has an ever-increasing international client base with many of his sales being from the USA.
Michael James Smith’s work is very striking as he uses rich colours and incredible detail in every painting.
He has been heralded as “Britain’s next top artist” by Artists & Illustrators.
