This lovely watercolour painting, titled ‘Resting on the Stile’ is signed by the artist, James Aitken, in the lower right corner. The painting is finished with a high-quality distressed gold frame and washline mount.
James Aitken (1846-1897) was a Scottish landscape artist.
He studied art with Horatio McCulloch, before moving to Dublin. There he attended the Royal Dublin Society’s school, and had Henry MacManus as teacher.
James Aitken moved to Glasgow in 1872. He exhibited at the Royal Academy, Glasgow Institute and Royal Hibernian Academy.
