This etching, titled ‘At The Tiller’, No. 48 of 75 is signed by the artist, Arthur Briscoe in the lower right corner. The etching is finished with a high-quality silver speckled frame.
Arthur Briscoe was born in Birkenhead in 1873 and died in 1943. He was a marine painter in oil and watercolour and an etcher.
Educated at Shrewsbury School but by 1891 the family had moved to Plas Newydd, Stone Row, Henllan Green, Denbighshire, where Arthur was an 18 year old art student. He studied at Slade Art School in London and at the Academy Julian in Paris.
Arthur Briscoe was elected an Associate of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers in 1930 and a member in 1933.
He exhibited at Brook Street Art Gallery; Connell & Sons Gallery; Fine Art Society; Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts; Liverpool Walker Art Gallery; New English Art Club; the Royal Academy; Royal Society of British Artists; Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers; Redfern Gallery and the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colour, from London in 1895 and 1926, Maldon, Essex 1898, Orford, Suffolk 1901, Colchester 1920 and Walton-on-Naze 1938, both in Essex. He also illustrated ‘Handbook on Sailing’ by Clove Hitch (1904).
