About Winifred Austen

Winifred Austen (1876-1964) was and illustrator, painter and aquatint engraver born in Ramsgate, Kent.

She often painted wild animals and was successful in the illustration of books. Her etchings of birds were very popular in the 1940s and 1950s. Her work showed Japanese influence.

Austen exhibited at the Royal Academy and the Royal Society of Painter Etchers, which in 1922, she was then elected a member or that society. She was also elected to the Society of Women Artists (1902), the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers (1907), the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours (1933), and from 1903, she was a fellow of the Royal Zoological Society.
