Artist Biography
Oil painting signed by the artist William Mellor. Finished with a high-quality golden frame and an off-white slip. Pair priced at £5400
William Mellor was born in Barnsley, Yorkshire in 1851 and died in 1931. He both lived and worked in Ilkley, Scarborough and Harrogate.
Mellor travelled widely and was inspired by the landscapes of North Wales and the North East of England. He was particularly fond of Yorkshire, often painting the local views particularly those of Bolton Woods and Lakeland scenes. Many of his paintings also featured well-known views such as Bolton Abbey and scenes featuring rivers such as the Wharfe and Nidd or the majestic lakes of Grasmere and Ullswater.
His landscapes are easily recognised; and are generally scenes in summer or early autumn. His paintings are detailed with delicately rendered trees and foliage bathed in sunlight. His work shows rich colours and atmospheric lighting giving excellent perspective. Mellor paintings are highly sought after by collectors today.
His father, Joseph Mellor was also a landscape painter. He received much of artistic education in his father’s studio. His son, Everett Watson Mellor (1878-1965) was also an artist who followed his father in subject and style.
He exhibited at the Walker Art Gallery and the Manchester City Art Gallery.
