This lovely watercolour of the Italian coast, close to Naples, is signed by Charles Rowbotham in the lower right corner. This painting is finished with a high-quality classic gold frame and washline mount.
Charles Edmund Rowbotham was born in London in 1856 and died in 1921. He lived in London, Brighton and Croydon.
He was a landscape and marine painter.
Charles was from a family of artists and the son of Thomas C L Rowbotham. He was also the grandson of a landscape and marine painter, Thomas Leeson Scarse Rowbotham.
Charles began his artistic career by painting the figures in his father’s landscapes. In 1871, 15 year old Charles, was living at Percy Lodge, Kensington with his parents and siblings.
He was well known for detailed watercolour landscapes and the coast of Italy and it’s lakes.
Rowbotham exhibited from 1877, at the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour; Royal Society of British Artists; Royal Hibernian Academy; The Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool; Manchester City Art Gallery; Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts; Dudley Gallery and at the Royal Society of Artists in Birmingham. He was a member of the Ipswich Art Club.
