About Francis Murray Russell Flint
Francis Murray Russell Flint is the son of one of the greatest watercolour painter and illustrators of the early twentieth century, Sir William Russell Flint. He was taught by his father and became a distinguished painter himself, most known of his maritime and coastal scenes.
Francis Russell Flint was born in Brentford, Middlesex in 1915. He spent his early childhood in West London, first in Hammersmith, and then, from 1925, at Peel Cottage, in Kensington, where his father would live and work for the rest of his life. Francis studied at Cheltenham College and the Grosvenor School of Modern Art in Pimlico. His artistic training continued at the Royal Academy Schools, followed by a period studying in Paris. During the mid 1930s, he also spent time aboard the HMS Conway, a school ship moored in the Mersey, in preparation for serving in the Merchant Navy.
