Artist Biography
This lovely watercolour painting of Swarkestone, Derbyshire is signed by the artist Henry Charles Fox, in the lower right corner. The painting is finished with a classic gold frame and washline mount.
Henry Charles Fox was born in London in 1855 and died in 1929. He was a prolific artist, best know for his superb rural watercolour landscapes. Looking at Fox’s paintings is like stepping back in time to Victorian rural Britain. Rural life has changed so much since the time Fox was painting, his work captures what is now regarded as the idealised rural life. Henry Charles Fox’s paintings are a wonderful record of Victorian rural England.
In 1880, Fox had his first painting accepted at the Royal Academy and exhibited another 20 works at the academy up to 1913. By the early 1900s, H C Fox was a well established artist who continued to exhibit at many provincial and other city galleries. These galleries include: Royal Scottish Academy, Royal Society of British Artists, Royal Hibernian Academy, Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts, Royal Institution of Painters in Watercolours and Manchester City Art Gallery.
Henry Charles Fox was a very well respected artist. In 1889 he was elected a full member of the Royal Society of British Artists (RBA). A year after he was elected a member of the RBA he exhibited a total of 113 paintings there.
