John Cyril Harrison (1898-1985) was born in Wiltshire. He spent his youth drawing and sketching. Harrison developed a strong ability to draw birds with great realism as a result of his practise of taxidermy, which allowed him to learn their anatomy. Post WWI he was enrolled at the Slade School of Art. Following his graduation he visited Scotland in the company of Seton Gordon, author of the book ‘Days with the Golden Eagle’, which Harrison illustrated for him in 1927. He illustrated many other books, including ‘Bird Portraits’.
Harrison lived in Norfolk for many years and it was there he had the opportunity to study the many species that live in, or migrate through, that part of England. He made a particular study of game birds (such as partridge and pheasant, grouse and ptarmigan).
