About Edwin Thomas Johns
Edwin Thomas Johns (1862-1947) was born in Ipswitch and spent many of his initial years as architect. Following the establishment of his own architecture firm ‘Johns & Slater’, Johns began to pursue painting. He found particular success in his later years following retirement.
Working primarily with watercolours, Johns painted with both an incredible detail and softness, most frequently capturing portraits. He exhibited annually at the Ipswitch Art Club and spent a year as the club’s President. Johns’ further accomplishments include, exhibiting at the Royal Academy, and the presentation of a portrait in the Colchester and Ipswitch Museum Service.
