Bush Hardy was born in 1842, in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England. He died in 1897 in Maida Vale, London. He was a prolific artist, who painted mainly in oil and watercolour. He was well known for his works of vessels of ample size and sail area; as well he popularized professional fishing in many of his works. As a young man, he travelled to Holland and Italy. His paintings feature coastal scenes in England and the Netherlands, the French Channel ports and the Venetian Lagoon. Bush Hardy was also the father to the painter, illustrator and poster designer, Dudley Hardy.
He exhibited in the RA, the ROI, the RI, the Fine Art Society, the RWS, the RHA, the Walker Art Gallery, the Manchester Art Gallery and at the SS 1871-97 and NWS. In 1884 Hardy was elected a Member of the Royal Society of British Artists. Hardy’s prolific coastal scenes painted in fresh and vivid watercolours achieve enormous popularity and he continues, even to this day, to be a well sought after artist.
