Artist Biography
About David Woodlock
David Woodlock (1842-1929) was born in County Tipperary, Ireland. At the age of twelve, he moved to Liverpool and studied at the Liverpool Academy of Arts and Liverpool School of Art. In 1872, Woodlock joined the Liver Sketching Club, becoming the President in of the club in 1897. He was also a member of the Liverpool Academy of Arts. He first exhibited at the Walker Art Gallery, and then in 1880 exhibiting in London and at the Royal Academy of Arts from 1888. He also exhibited at Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours, the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists, the Royal Manchester Institution and the Royal Scottish Academy. During the late 1880s, Woodlock moved to Sheffield where he started working as a ‘hosier and haberdasher’. In his spare time, he studied at St George’s Museum, Walkley, which had been founded by John Ruskin for the education of local workers.
