About Frances Broomfield
Frances Broomfield was born and brought up in Warrington, an industrial town in the North of England. After completing Art School she went to London, painting professinally in the city since 1972. Her work has been ‘described as ‘sophisticated naive’. This paradoxical term reflects the ambiguity of her paintings. She presents us with an idiosyncratic view of the world, through her images of both real and imaginary creatures, myths, archetypes and visual puns. Humour is ever present, especially in her portraits of the famously eccentric and the tantalisingly obscure, which sometimes belies the painstaking research required for each painting. Close attention to detail and her love for nature, together with a sense of the unusualall find expression in her pictures. She is currenlty working on a series of pintings based on nursery rhymes and enchanted gardens. Broomfield has exhibited almost exclusively with the Portal Gallery in London since 1977 and her work is in private and public collections worldwide.
