Artist Biography
Oil on canvas, signed and dated 1992, by the artist, Stephen Renard. Finished with a high-quality distressed silver-leaf frame.
Stephen Renard was born in 1947 in Huddersfield, England. Although Renard was incredibly artistically talented from an early age, he decided to go to Liverpool University to study in the natural sciences where he got a degree. He then moved on to becoming a teacher in Biology at a training college. During this time, he developed a passion for sailing. Renard decided to abandon teaching and became a professional portrait artist. He took lessons in ink drawing and eventually became a freelance illustrator for children’s comics.
In 1981, he purchased a boat and taught himself to sail. He also took up the hobby of painting ships. His work then became popular amongst marine art enthusiasts.
Since then, he concentrated on painting yachting subjects, following in the footsteps of Steven Dews. He was also asked to work for the Royal Thames Yacht Club. His first commission was a painting of the Spithead Review, honouring the birthday of Queen Elizabeth and the Queen Mother.
Stephen Renard is widely known as one of the most rapidly rising commercial successes in this field. His work is always in constant demand from collectors.
