About William Calcott Knell
William Calcott Knell was a British painter known for his maritime subjects, particularly coastal scenes with boats. His father, William Adolphus Knell, also worked as a marine painter, and his influence is evident in the composition and execution of his motifs. Knell’s works were exhibited at the Royal Academy, the Society of British Artists, and the British Institution between 1848 and 1865. His notable works include “Collier Brig Running before the Wind in a Fresh Breeze off Sheerness,” “Fishing Boats Hauling Nets near Lowestoft,” “Fishing Boats off Harwich,” and “Evening Oyster Boat off Southend Pier.”
