This lovely watercolour landscape of Cemaes Bay is signed by the artist, Joseph Hughes Clayton in the lower left corner. The painting is finished with a high-quality classic gold frame and washline mount.
Joseph Hughes Clayton was born Liverpool, in 1870 and died in 1930. He painted mainly in watercolour and oils. He painted usually coastal and marine scenes, particularly of the North Wales coast, often of Cemaes Bay, Anglesey where he lived. He also often painted the North West of England.
His free lively style with loose brush strokes has made his work very popular.
He exhibited 1891-1929 and was a prominent member of the Royal Cambrian Academy. He also exhibited prolifically at the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, where he showed 42 works.
