Neil Cawthorne was born in Leicester, England in 1936 (d.2022). Cawthorne was a 20th Century equestrian painter who did not begin painting seriously until in his late twenties. Cawthorne in his youth hunted with the Quorn and Fernie Hunts, it was on these rides that he found much inspiration, his depictions of these experiences constituted much of his early work. In 1979 Cawthorne became one of the founding fathers of the Society of Equestrian Artists (SEA), the equivalent to the Royal Academy in terms of equestrian art. Over the years he has won many prizes for his work including the President’s Medal at the annual exhibition of the SEA at Christie’s.
Cawthorne’s paintings can be found in the private collections of racing’s ‘great and good’ including HRH the Prince of Wales, Paul Mellon, Lord Vestey, the Duke of Beaufort and Lord Harrington.
